BALLYNATRAY ESTATE  |  IRELAND

1/11

With links to Sir Walther Raleigh, Ballynatray is one of Southern Ireland's most important estates still in private ownership.

Situated on the River Blackwater, the current house dates back to the 18th Century. We were commisioned in the first instance to help our client restore and enhance the long-neglected gardens, pleasure grounds and parkland and also to assist in the creation and implementation of a landscape management strategy.

Together with Adam Architecture, designs were drawn up for the ten-acre walled gardens, which had become completely overgrown after decades of neglect. The new formal schemes including; an orangery, cascade, avenues, sculpture gardens, vegetable gardens and an arboretum, take reference from the historical layout, which was uncovered through research.

Planning permission for their implementation was granted after a two-year consultation process. An ongoing programme is in place to eradicate unwanted vegetation before any works can commence, although the arboretum has been planted.

A new 'parterre de broderie' has recently been designed and installed together with new parkland tree planting.
